April Lafferty Fine Art

I was born in Vancouver British Columbia but spent most of my growing up years in Ontario. I knew at an early age that art was a very improtant part of my life. I would often spend hours drawing and sketching everything from horses, to the farm down the road from my bedroom window. My parents, both being amateur artists, encouraged me by providing lots of art books and materials.
Unfortunately, after my father's early death I gave up my dreams of becoming an artist. It wasn't until many years later that I began to find my way back to my passion. Spending time in the major galleries in Paris, France, Belguim and Holland made me realize how important art was to me. Returning to Canada, I spent time at the National gallery in Ottawa and took classes in life drawing.
It wasn't until I met a young Russian artist, Igor Babailov, and began to study with him, that I really decided art would be a career. His training, commitment and encouragement helped to reinforce my own.
After working for Bell Canada for many years I took early retirement. Subsquently, artist John Mortenson and I set up a studio together. In 1999 we decided to leave Ontario and move to British Columbia, discovering that this was a place we both wanted to return to; John having lived in B C in the 70's and my having been born there.
Moving to Vancouver Island, I am finally pursuing a life-long dream of being a full time artist. Working in oils and acrylics, I paint a varienty of subjects using a close-up perspective, bold form and colour.
